New Year, a Special Visitor and Wild Camping!

Happy New Year!    January 2016

The Best start to the New Year was my son George coming out to visit for a week at Bellavista. I hadn't seen George for nearly a year, he has been travelling and working in Brisbane so I was so  excited to see him!
We took him to Ronda and Marbella, Gib and Puerto Banus along with lots of meals out from Indian to Mexican. He is off travelling again shortly so we will meet again in 6 months! I will miss him.

George and our Furry Friend

George enjoying Neils big fry up!

Our 5 week stay for Christmas and New Year at Bellavista had come to an end and with a New Year ahead we are ready and eager to move on to new places. We have had some great neighbours like Neil and Sue from Wellingborough and John and Denise from Devon and their beautiful Bernease Mountain dog, Bella.

                                                   Neils Happiest when he's Driving!

We decided to give the Aires in Spain a go, they are free or low cost parking areas especially for Motorhomes, some are just car parks some are right on the waters edge like our next stop at Puerto Almerimar just West of Almeria. It is a beautiful location with a beach and a view of the Sierra Nevada snow capped mountains on one side and a very pretty Yachting marina on the otherside.
There are only 9 electric hookups and we were lucky to get the last one! The Aire is very popular with around 40-50 Motorhomes parked up mainly German French and English the Aire officially holds 20!

Almerimar Aire with Bessie on the Left

                                                           Almerimar Marina and Bars

                                                                Our View from Bessie

                                                                 Morning Cuppa

                                                          The Port Office and Lighthouse

There are plenty of bars selling drinks with very generous free Tapas which turned out to be our lunch most days. The budget over Christmas and New Year was blown so we need to get back on track and save some pennies somewhere, the Aires are a lot cheaper than Campsites so to find a good Aire with great views is a little gem and at €12.65 a night with Electric is great!

We met up again with our friends Ray and Val and Sky Rocket the dog for a few days, we always have fun with these two and stayed a total of 7 nights.

Almerimar region grow Melons, Tomatoes, Peppers Strawberries etc in the winter under huge polytunnels mainly for export around Europe. The landscape is full of them as far as the eye can see and because they can grow virtually anything in this
micro climate and they don't need the soil here they can grow anywhere even on the side of the hills! The farmers use a layer of manure then a deep layer of sand instead of soil water is then filtered by the sand. They don't use any chemicals on the plants just one insect to beat any bugs. I can't remember the name of it!

Almeria is also famous for around 300 film sets like The Good The Bad The Ugly and Game of Thrones as they have mountain backdrops dessert like terrain and green forests along with the coastline.

The Aires are interesting, there is always new people arriving from everywhere, I met an amazing couple in their late sixties from Melbourne Australia, they were on a 9 month tour of Europe and they were so inspiring. They flew to Germany to buy a Camper a smaller one to Bessie about 6m long Bessie is 7.8m and they have travelled the whole of Europe, I mean everywhere! they had a tent and a tandem bike which they would use to follow some of the rivers i.e. the Rhine Valley in Germany where the camper could not access and they would take their tent and bike off for about 3 months to follow the rivers! I could have listened to their stories all day, what an inspiring couple it made our Adventure seem very tame, but we are lucky enough to even be here so thats good enough for me.
Our last night at Almerimar we were woken by we thought someone shaking the Motorhome!  Neil got up and had a look around outside about 4am but it wasn't until the morning and heard on the news there had been an Earthquake just off the coast of Malaga!  The earth finally shook for us!

We arranged to meet Val and Ray and do a few days Wild Camping at a few beaches near Aguillas.

                                                Campfires and Candlelight evenings

                                                             Neil climbing again!

                                                       Wild Camping beaches

                                                                        Lazy days

                                                                Frontline Views

After a 3 days living wild we were in desperate need of a washing machine and Bessie was full of waste and water was running low.  Bessie can run without electric for about 3 days with the solar panel on the roof charging the batteries to run lights and the we can cook and heat the water for showers by gas, and she can hold 110 litres of water and waste.
We found a garage nearby and for €1.50 you could fill water tanks drop your waste fill with diesel and gas, jet wash your motorhome and even hoover it out if you needed to. We haven't found another garage like this so far!
Next stop we decided we needed to be on a Campsite so we could do some washing. We opted for a site called Playa Mazzaron just north of Almeria and turned out to be our first mistake. All the sites are very full so this wasn't our first choice but the reviews were good. We arrived and they had one pitch left at the back of the site opposite the tennis courts, we just about got Bessie on the pitch which was surrounded by other peoples washing and underpants. There are a lot of long termers here that are dug in for the whole winter.

The site felt like an OAP german compound with most of the campers being over 70 and walking around in fluorescent dressing gowns! We decided to make do just to get the washing washed and dried. After finding the only hot feed washing machine on site that only did a 29 minute wash at €3.50 I wasn't too happy. In the morning we were woken by a hoard of Germans in some sort of excersise routine with sticks in the tennis courts opposite! The Wifi that we had paid €6 for 2 days didn't work so Neil complained at Reception and the receptionist accused Neil of lying!! so Neil ripped up the wifi ticket and threw it at him.

The final straw was announcements on the Hi-De-Hi tannoys for the days activities! We lasted 24 hours and we made a quick escape! Luckily I found the only dryer on site and hogged it until my washing was dry!
We drove to the north of Alicante having now done 3000 miles to an Aire called El Campello but it was full, everywhere is so busy with Motorhomers apparently more than last year that we have been struggling to get into coastal sites.
A view of Alicante from the A7 coastal motorway

We headed back down to an Aire at Santa Pola where luckily there were a few spaces. The site isn't in the prettiest location but it was neat and tidy and run by a really nice German guy and the town centre was within walking distance.  The cost was €13 a night with electric. We stayed for 3 nights before moving up the coast again.

                                                                 Santa Pola Aire

Grand Alacant Beach with a strawberry Mojito

Santa Pola Seafront with a 10km promenade

                                                         Tarbarca Island off Santa Pola

We are now nearly 6 months into our trip, the time has flown by and we are still loving the Adventure and looking forward to the next 4/5 months and even more places to explore!

Christmas and New Year near Marbs!

Our last night at Turiscampo in Portugal was spent with our neighbours Mick and Sue. They are both Caravan Park Wardens and are on a 3 month holiday with their caravan before returning back to the UK to start a new job on a new park in Wales for next season. They used to live near Benidorm and ran a bar for 7 years so they had some tales to tell. The bill at the bar was also a shocker!

4th December 2015
We used the A22 toll road back to the Spanish border, the road is an easy exit out of Southern Portugal but it is not cheap if you do get charged it is one of the few toll roads that has registration readers instead of toll points and nowhere apart from the Spanish border to register your vehicle so we will wait and see if we get a bill on the doorstep when we arrive home!
We headed south of Seville and just below Cadiz to our next site called La Rosaleda Camping at Conil De La Frontera. A tiered site which was pleasant enough but lacked and sort of atmosphere, a bit bland if you know what I mean. The showers although clean are on a timer of 7 mins of hot water which is fine for Neil but not so good if you have long thick hair!  The hookup is 10 amp so I can't blow too much in Bessie this time! Wifi is included in the price of €21 a night.

La Rosaleda Camping

A Tapas food fair opened in Conil, the local town which we could walk into and Neil enjoyed his tasters until we got to the last Tapa which turned out to be Rabbit Stew!!
The following day we caught a bus into oldest city in Europe, Cadiz. The city is virtually surrounded by the sea sitting out on a Penisular. The old city is steeped in history and hundreds of long very narrow streets centre Cadiz Cathedral. For €5 each you can tour the inside, go down into the Crypt and climb the 150ft bell tower. There you can see Cadiz in its glory!

The Port of Cadiz is very popular with the large cruise liners and you can see them close up as you walk along the Port side.

Very tempted to board!
Working our way down the coast towards Tarifa we had a 2 night stopover at Pinar San Jose to meet up again with our friends Charley and Michelle we had met at Turiscampo. They are staying here for 3 months. It was so nice to see them again. Charley had reserved a pitch next to them and the moment we arrived we were invited to a gathering of their friends with music, food and lots to drink!
We had a wonderful welcome and a great afternoon!
Our Pitch at Pinar San Jose

A Welcome Party!

The following day we explored the surroundings of the site which is set within a national park with lots of walks on offer and within walking distance to a huge beach.
The area is unspoilt and peaceful, the site is spacious and set amongst the pine forest. The facilities are modern and very clean with a bar/restaurant and large shop, there is an outdoor pool and tennis courts.  The price including hook up was €20.50 a night. We enjoyed our stay here catching up with Charley and Michelle and hope to see them again in the New year.

                                                            Pinar San Jose Camping

Our last stopover before Xmas was a site just outside Tarifa the most southern tip of Western Europe.
The site Torre De La Pena is situated on the side of a hill and the pitches are tiered all the way up. Bessies pitch had a view of Tarifa and North Africa. The site facilities are clean and basic with a nice outdoor pool with views. Electric is only 5Amp @ €4 extra a night! Not the best value but the best views! Our neighbour was a German chap and was obviously staying longterm on his pitch as he tended to all the plants on our level and had made a garden around his motorhome! Neil fancied a piece of wood that was lying next to our pitch to level up our table next thing we know there was a knock on our door from the German man asking if we had seen his wooden border for his plants on our Pitch! Neil said he had chopped it up!!! not realising we had stashed it away in Bessies bathroom! Luckily he didn't understand what Neil was saying and we made a quick departure!

10th December 2015  Our Site for Christmas!

We travelled approx an hour to reach our site for Christmas where we met  Val and Ray and their dog Sky who we met at Turiscampo in Portugal, we have planned to spend Christmas with them. The site is situated between Gibraltar and Estepona on the Costa Del Sol. This fairly new site just outside Manilva has very modern facilities and a bar and restaurant. The site is beachfront although the beach is dark and gritty and not very appealing to look at. The site is within walking distance along a promenade to La Duquesa and its harbour front which is filled with every type of restaurant you could wish for.  Neil can definitely have his curry he has been longing for!

Ariel view of La Duquesa with Bellavista is over to the left side.

A Day in Marbs!
Marbella is only 16km from the site so we drove and parked in one of many underground carparks which is not the cheapest option but driving into a bigger resort on a weekend, parking is always hard to find. The beachfront promenade is full of tapas bars and restaurants and a great place to people watch with your favourite drink and tapas. Val and I had our first Paella, Neil won't eat it so had to wait for a partner as usually restaurants will only make it for a minimum of 2 people. It was worth the wait!

                                                             Neils Mini Tapas Burger!
                                                                 Marbella Harbour

                                                                 Marbella Beachfront

                                                          Another well earn't drink!

A Day in Ronda.
We hired 2 cars for the week before Christmas to explore the surrounding area and our first trip was to Ronda, a Roman city in the province of Malaga, 750 metres above sea level. The Puerto Nuevo bridge is one of the tallest bridges and towers 120 metres above the canyon floor.

                                                      Beautiful views from the city

                                                               Can you see Neil?!

Back home to Bessie for Cheese and Wine!

A Day in Gibraltar.
Our campsite is only 16km from Gib so whilst we had the car we had a day trip back home with Val Ray and Sky.
Our little hire car with The Rock of Gibraltar in the distance

We parked the car at La Linea just outside the border and walked into Gib, we were glad we did as the traffic is just like the centre of London around the border. You walk in and through customs and then walk across the runway which seems very strange to get to the centre. I have flown into Gib before and the decsent in is scary!

Gibraltars Runway!

We took a tour of the Rock instead of the cable car as it seemed better value and we had our own guide who was full of knowledge that we would never have known had we made our own way up.
The tour took us to the top of the rock, to the caves, and the World War Tunnels and of course to see the famous monkeys!

Tangiers in the distance

The Caves inside the Rock

The Tunnels that were dug by hand 300 metres long halfway up inside the Rock

The outlook post at the end of the Tunnel!

After a great tour we had our fix of home with a visit to Morrisons!
This wasn't our weekly shop but a basket full of the things we miss or have a job to find! Mince pies were top of my list and Haribos and sausages for Neil!

A visit to old ground in Estepona.
I have good memories of a family holiday in Estepona when I was only about 10yrs old, the only things I remember is a big white villa on a small complex overlooking the beach just outside the resort. The villa had an upstairs balcony and steps onto the beach and I remember a roundabout with a fountain in the middle. 38 years later I wanted to go back and try to find the villa. So whilst we had the hire car   we scoured the beachfront of Estepona and on the very outskirts I saw the fountain and a little further on I noticed the complex, the villas had angled roof tops so you could spot them quite easily, I was so pleased to find them, the beach is much smaller now and the villas are very tired looking but the memories of me and my sister playing here came flooding back, happy times.

A Day in Puerto Banus
We spent a day mingling with the rich and famous and came away feeling very jealous, the cars the boats and stores make you very envious, but we did splash out and have a coffee on the harbour front.

Neil favourite boat! Can you read the sign?!

How the other half live!

Christmas and New Year 2015!
Christmas Eve I did miss home family and friends. The run up to Christmas here isn't the same as at home with all the preperations that go on with decorating the tree putting all the decorations up and  setting the table for Christmas dinner etc. But the sun has kept on shining and walking on the beach on new years day in our shorts definitely made up for it!

We booked our Christmas Dinner at The Place at La Duquesa Marina. The restaurant and its staff make you all feel very welcome and we had a fabulous night.

                                                             The Place La Duquesa

                                                            Getting into the festive spirit!

                                                                 Neils one of many!

                                                                  Just like home!

                                                            Christmas Pud for dessert!

We spent New Years Eve at the same venue along with friends from the site, we had a great night!

Neils had a few too many!
